Photo Frenzy pt1: UK Short Track, King's Lynn, 9 August 2009

17 09 09 - 20:35 En route to a Cadwell Park trackday in August I took a bit of a detour via King's Lynn Arena in Norfolk to catch a round of the UK Short Track series. Short Track is the UK version of American flat track racing, where such names as Kenny Roberts and Nicky Hayden cut their racing teeth before heading off to become world champions on the tarmac. Over here it's a slightly more low-key affair, a bunch of enthusiastic amateurs gathering at speedway circuits around the country. But it's no less of a spectacle for that, and in the August sun there's not many better ways to spend a Sunday afternoon. The next round is this weekend (19th/20th) at the East of England showground in Peterborough as part of the BMF show. Check it out if you're going.

I took my camera along with me, and after sitting on the photos for a month, here they are...

On your marks
On your marks!

Go
Go!

Hang on?
Hang on a minute, aren't they meant to be going round the outside? Unlike most rounds, this event was a 'TT', or 'Track and Trail' round, where rather than a simple oval, a more complex circuit is used.

Melee
So, about a dozen bikes with no front brake, and a tightening first corner. What could possibly go wrong?

Gary Inman
Well, someone could fall off, and their bike get wedged in your back wheel. Number 13 is freelance bike journalist and publisher of Sideburn magazine, Gary Inman. Fortunately, the race was red-flagged and he was able to join the restart.

Jump
Isn't this called 'flat track'? Not when it's a TT race. This is the 'trail' part.

Slide
Pure style.

» driverchris Graphic designer, bike and car nut, and vague acquaintance through the PB forum. I enjoy dipping into his blog from time to time, and this is a particularly cool post - classy interpretations of motorsport paint schemes, applied via the medium of Photoshop to a Fender Strat. Can you guess them all?

» Lois on the loose Stumbled across the name Lois Pryce via the ADVrider forums. Have just finished reading her first book, detailing her ride from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego on an XT225 Serow.

» Old man on a bike The print version of this got dropped on my desk at work by a colleague. 73 year old man rides from Mexico to Tierra del Fuego on a CG125. Hooray for daft adventures.
